Let talk about Lye soap and why its so much better than mass produced soap...
First of all, lye soap is not harsh nor is it abrasive to your skin.
Just for fun, the next time you are at your pharmacy, walk down the soap aisle and look at all the beautiful packaging and smell those delicious scents. NOW, look how many actually say soap... Most of them either say moisturizing bar, or cleansing bar, or something other than soap. WHY is that? Well, its because they aren't soap. They are actually detergents that are mostly not gentle or beneficial to your skin.
When choosing your handmade soap be careful not to pick up "Melt and Pour" soaps. YES, they are adorable and usually smell fantastic, but what they are usually a clear glycerin based soap that was premade and scents and colors are added. They are not harmful to you or to the environment but they are certainly not going to provide all the benefits that you will receive from handmade Lye soap.
The process of making handmade Lye soap is called cold process or hot processed. Cold process is definitely the best but takes the longest to cure, sometimes taking 6-8 weeks to completely cure. Hot process just means that the soap is cooked longer and cures faster. With both processes what happens is Lye is added Oils or Fats to produce a glycerin based soap. By using different oils and fats the creator can change the benefits and features of the desired results.
Be sure to read the label so you know exactly what you are washing with.
Happy Washing!!!
